Taking for granted.
I am sure everyone takes things for granted. Some just take things for granted more than others, and that's where you can see what kind of character that person possesses. People that do not usually take things for granted more than often make for better friends, as they tend to be more understanding, helpful and forgiving. On the other hand, people who always take things for granted make for bad friends, as they assume the world revolves around them, they are selfish and they do not give and take, only take. They most of the time think they are popular, and will be waited on hand and foot. Sadly, some of them actually are popular and this fires them to take more things for granted.
Of course, taking friendships for granted is just one of the many things we take for granted, but given my age I would think that friendship is something I would have experience in, and so do the rest of the people around my age, and not making it an overstatement.
It is probably true that life is never always fair. For someone who gives there will be someone who takes, and this ratio is never equal, usually inclining more towards the latter. So in friendships, there will be people who give more than take, and people who take more than give. A person who gives more than take, which, in my opinion, is the more understanding friend, will be taken for granted by another person who take more than give, in this case, the more selfish friend. If the former does not mind being taken for granted, the friendship can still go on, albeit a more unhappy one. However, if the former has already endured enough of being taken for granted, the friendship is off, and the latter will either reflect on he or she did wrongly, and try to make amends, or (this is where popularity kicks in) find another friend to take for granted. If the latter is popular, I am sure he or she will not have a problem searching for another friend.
So, even though we all take things for granted (some more than others), we should try to take a step back and reflect on whether we should be taking a certain thing for granted, and if the answer is no, we should stop doing so. Unfortunately, this will probably be quite an impossible task as we tend to take something for granted so often that we are not even aware we are taking it for granted.
Well, at least you did try.
